When I read it for the first time I had to go back and reread it atlest more times. It made my heart melt. Im not a Jacob fan, that I have to admit, but it made me love Edward even more. lol. Why? How many boyfriends out there woud actually say that to their girlfriend about their best friend who happens to be a male with an extreme crush on her excluding your Edward!? He is blamming himself for possible losing his girlfriend to someone who picked up the peices of her when he left. It made me feel his true love for Bella, how much he really cared for her that he could admit that. I know I know, my answer is kinda corny but sorry, I love that quote.
